Lauryn Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier and Snoop Dogg have been added to the lineup of this year's Rock the Bells festival.

A Tribe Called Quest will perform its platinum-selling album "Midnight Marauders" -- which reached a peak of No. 8 on the Billboard 200 in its entirety.

Hill's set was "prepared exclusively for Rock the Bells" and spans her entire career, including songs from the critically-acclaimed "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" as well as her work with the Fugees.

Snoop Dogg will perform his No. 1 debut album, "Doggystyle," in its entirety, while DJ Premier will appear as part of a special "Tribute to Gang Starr." In April, DJ Premier's Gang Starr partner, MC Guru, died of cancer.

These artists join Street Sweeper Social Club, Slick Rick, Wu-Tang Clan and more for the 2010 Rock the Bells festival.

The four date tour stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Washington, DC in late August.

According to the official Rock the Bells website, more acts will be announced.

Acclaimed hip-hop and soul singer Lauryn Hill has joined the bill for Rotorua's Raggamuffin music festival.

Hill, once a member of iconic rap group The Fugees, will headline the festival alongside an all-star line-up including Sly & Robbie, Wyclef Jean, Julian Marley, Shaggy, Sean Kingston, Steel Pulse, Katchafire, Sola Rosa, Iva Lamkum, Pacific Herbs and Sweet & irie.

There is a lot of confusion going on at the moment wheather or not Lauryn Hill is coming to play some shows in Europe this summer. A lot of sources CLAIM that the whole European Tour has been cancelled. HOWEVER, it seems that - so far - only the Montreux Jazz Festival Show and the gig at Stockholm Jazz have been called off.

More concerts have been called off. CLICK HERE for an updated schedule. It seems like it is just a matter of time when the remaining dates will are cancelled as well.

"Reclusive R&B-hip-hop star Lauryn Hill has put a halt to her planned comeback tour, canceling her entire European lineup of dates, the AP reports.

Hill was scheduled toheadline this year’s Stockholm Jazz Festival on July 15th, but her agent informed festival organizers yesterday that the show was off due to unspecified “health reasons.”

Hill’s performance at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival was also called off, as were scheduled concerts in Sweden, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Italy, France and Austria."

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released 10 years ago this week and went on to sell more than 8 million copies, win five Grammys and earn a four-star review in Rolling Stone. Mary J. Blige hailed it as "one of the most incredible albums ever made" and the record influenced a generation of soul and hip-hop artists.

"Music is about to change," Hill told Rolling Stone's Touré for his 1999 cover story. "I think now people feel a little more comfortable playing with the parameters. Writing more intensely.
"Miseducation's liner notes mostly credit Hill with producing, writing and arranging the entire album. It was, in fact, a huge group effort (as underlined by a lawsuit settled out of court in 2001 for a reported $5 million).

To celebrate the album, Rolling Stone spoke with many of those responsible for making it: a then-little known pianist named John Legend, D'Angelo, engineer Commissioner Gordon, backup singers, New-Ark producers, Hill's longtime companion Rohan Marley, her Fugee bandmate Pras Michel.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill: 10th Anniversary

On August 28th, Lauryn Hill’s solo debut masterpiece, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill will officially become a decade young. There’s no “old” in this equation (minus the soul of its creator), as Miseducation has manifested itself in a number of artists who were so greatly touched by the experience Lauryn Hill created for them and the rest of the world.
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill wasn’t just a run of the mill work from an already established musical genius. It was the effortless fusion of Hip-Hop and Soul in a way that never happened before and never will again.
Perhaps the album was intensified because Lauryn was with child throughout the birthing of this project. Her rich vocals held such emotion that the entire experience became intimate. Like she cooed in the past, she was singing our lives with her words.

Everyone related to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in some way, shape, or form the way everyone related to Lauryn Hill. Ten years later, the album holds just as much value as it did on the day that it was released.

Thematically, Miseducation represented a heightened awareness, personally for Lauryn Hill. Having lost love and found it once again, Ms. Hill set her life to music – releasing every note of anger, mistrust, love, and happiness. It was a matter of education – Lauryn was schooling us, but most of all, schooling herself. From the school themed album art to the classroom discussion interludes, Lauryn Hill taught a course on life with this album.

Even the cover – with wood designs inspired by Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Burnin’ reflected an etched image of Lauryn Hill on a desk top…complete with a pencil. Whether this album created some Biblical experience or merely was just a collection favorite, there isn’t one person on this Earth who has listened to this album and hasn’t made at least one song their own.

Intro
Class was in session. The school bell was ringing, but Lauryn Hill was absent. She had her own class to teach. These interludes conducted by Ras Baraka echoed throughout the work, reminding us that listening was learning.

Lost Ones
The rumor mill concluded that “Lost Ones” was directed toward Lauryn’s former Fugee-mate Wyclef Jean. From the ever so powerful opening “It’s funny how money change a situation” to the very end “You just lost one,” the song hits hard with organic drums mixed with thorough basslines. The Toots and Maytals meets Sister Nancy samples add a tinge of reggae to this track filled with biting wit and passion. Whoever Lauryn was referring to had their hat handed to them by the close of this song. This is perhaps one of the most slept on "beef" tracks in Hip-Hop history.

Ex-Factor
Lauryn Hill said once in an interview that she intentionally tuned the instruments on Miseducation slightly off-key to create this sound that touched your soul. “Ex-Factor” depicts that intent clearly. The song opens with a haunting bassline that introduces Lauryn’s textured vocals about a love that she can’t simply bear to live with…or without. It’s amazing to think that Lauryn originally wrote this song for Aretha Franklin, but Lauryn kept it because it felt all too personal to give away. The chimes add this whimsical air to Lauryn’s deep pool of emotion. This song undoubtedly tugged at the world’s heartstrings. Not to mention, who else but Lauryn could sing the word “reciprocity” completely on-beat?

To Zion
Carlos Santana’s guitar licks on “To Zion” were nothing short of a religious experience. Once the snares kicked in, the result was this heartfelt marching music that was thought provoking even before Lauryn entered on the track. Many love and respect this song for the powerful vocals and instrumentation, but the lyrics held a ring of social commentary.

Lauryn was pregnant, at the prime of her career…and people wanted her to get an abortion. Zion was single-handedly the muse for this great masterpiece of a song, and he almost didn’t have a chance to be. But Lauryn didn’t listen. “Look at your career they said. Lauryn, baby, use your head. But instead I chose to use my heart.” In preparing for the birth of Zion, Lauryn mothered this beautiful song.

Doo Wop (That Thing)
When New York’s Hot 97 first aired this song, it was during Funkmaster Flex’s show, and Lauryn was at the station with him. She explained that the keys on “Doo Wop (That Thing)” literally came from a tiny old school kiddie piano. These were the subtleties that made Miseducation so phenomenal. Lauryn did everything in her power to produce this body of work where every chord and lyric really meant something.

The keys and horns on “Doo Wop” were like a musical time machine that even the song's video accurately captured. Lauryn spoke of proceeding with caution in love, because both men and women can be silly heartbreakers. She should know, she had been there before. After all, “Lauryn is only human.”

Superstar
Lauryn Hill credited both Jose Feliciano and Jim Morrison for their individual versions of “Light My Fire” which was sampled at the beginning of “Superstar.” As Lauryn slid through the track harmoniously, there was this air of snarkiness and wit as she addressed all of the quasi-artists. It was almost like Lauryn was saying, “Really?” to the world in a way that was so far from arrogant but so close to the truth. The rap in the middle is comical and classic. “I used to work at Foot Locker, they fired me and fronted. Or I quitted, now I spit it…however do you want it.” Her Foot Locker referee uniform should be hanging on their wall like Jordan’s jersey at the Chicago Bulls Stadium.

Final Hour
Pure fire. Guitars, flutes, and a backbeat: that was all Lauryn needed to remind the world that she hadn’t gone soft. She was one of the greatest MCs of all time and had no problem admitting that. But even in the midst of claiming her braggin’ rites, she still informed that nothing you managed to have in wealth would matter once the 11th hour rolled around.

Further, it was message to all of the nay-sayers. She was gonna do her...years before Rocko coined the phrase. There was no stopping L-Boogie, and whether singing or rhyming, she was going to push on. “…and even if there are leaks you can’t capsize this ship, ‘cause I baptize my lips every time I take sips.”

When It Hurts So Bad
Hypnotic harps opened this song. Then Lauryn proceeded to sing the first part of her rap verse on “Manifest” off The Score. The recurring theme of “when it hurts so bad, why’s it feel so good,” was present all throughout Miseducation, but this song encapsulated it. Lauryn softened the truth of people's tendencies to be masochists in love. It was a personal story for Lauryn to tell; a purging of emotions. If by now you didn’t realize she was bruised but never broken, then you missed the point of the album.

I Used to Love Him
If there was anyone on the planet at the time that Lauryn should have teamed up with to discuss being women scorned, it was Mary J Blige. Mary held a perfect role in the song as a co-sign. She was that best girlfriend who openly admitted, “Yeah girl, I’ve been there before.” When they sing in dialogue toward the middle of the song, it’s so fluid, but their vocals are so beautifully distinguishable. Having Mary beside her for support, Lauryn was slightly more vulnerable on this song. And Mary, well, she is the purveyor of songs about pain, so she knew what she was doing.

Forgive Them Father
Lauryn collaborated with Reggae badass Shelly Thunder on this “Concrete Jungle”-sampled track. The church organs and religious undertones send warning shots once again to those who make a career out of wronging others. It became very obvious by this song that the Miseducation had a very specific tracklist. Lauryn was through with discussing her pain and on the road to forgiveness, but she’d never forget, and through both singing and rhyming, she’d found her strength to move on. But like she cryptically cooed, “A friend once said – and I’ve found to be true – that every day people, they lie to God too. So what makes you think that they won’t lie to you?” She was a Hip-Hop confessional!

Every Ghetto, Every City
New Jersey, stand up! This ode to the New Jerusalem was a little piece of nostalgia that anyone from anywhere could relate to like it was their block Lauryn was singing about. For the Jersey folks (like myself), “Every Ghetto, Every City” was very personal with specific points in the life of New York City’s close neighbor. It felt good to hear Lauryn sing about her stomping grounds, while at the same time make poignant remarks about the timeline of her people – not just her Jersey people, but Black people.

Nothing Even Matters
This song was so romantic, it’s a surprise that people didn’t think L-Boogie and D’Angelo had a secret love affair going on. "Nothing Even Matters" marks the turning point for Miseducation – not only was Lauryn no longer sad, but she had found love again. It was almost cinematic, like the star of your favorite film finally getting what she wanted all along. Cue the applause.

Everything Is Everything
This song was perhaps the most uplifting on the entire album. Lauryn channeled Stevie as she expressed her ability to accept the things she couldn’t change, the courage to change the things she could, and the wisdom to know the difference. It was musical serenity at its best, and the award-winning video was the icing on the cake. The city as a turntable served as a reminder that even in the midst of mixing song with rap, this was Hip-Hop music. Lauryn urged us to demand more from the universe and to abide by the classic metaphor "develop a negative into a positive picture."

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
The title track embodied Lauryn’s realization that every answer she needed to find was found within herself. This was Lauryn’s “ah-ha!” moment, and she shared it with all of us. We’ve all had one, so it was completely relatable and kept within the theme of the album.

Can't Take My Eyes Off of You
Lauryn’s take on this Frank Valli classic was so light and sweet with its airy horns and flavorful beatboxing, that despite it being a cover, it was nice to hear Lauryn so cheerful. The only track with lyrics that weren’t Lauryn’s, she made them her own and in doing so created another classic cover like she had with “Killing Me Softly.”

Tell Him
This song was arguably everyone’s favorite album cut. Intended to be a bonus track, “Tell Him” was so much more. Lauryn was singing hymns for the real “man” in her life: God. “Tell Him” was so classic Lauryn at the time – God-loving without being preachy, mellow without being weak, and spiritual without being overbearing. This song concluded the Miseducation and sealed it. It was the final cut that rounded off the perfect album. When Lauryn would perform this song live, there was never a dry eye in the building. We had taken this emotional journey with her – laughed with her and cried with her – up until the very end.

Ten years later, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has stood the test of time. Lauryn crafted a classic, and even if we are never blessed with another note again, this work has left an irreplaceable mark on music history. Often imitated, never duplicated, Lauryn Hill we miss you and hope to share another journey with you again. Until then, thank you for this gift.

Wyclef launches emergency relief alliance for Haiti

Haitian-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean launched a new initiative to help his impoverished homeland on Tuesday following last month's deadly food riots. The initiative is aimed at raising $48 million over the next six months to fund expanded food distribution, job creation and assistance for farmers in the poorest country in the Americas.

Dubbed "Together For Haiti" it is backed by the World Food Program, the Pan American Development Foundation and Yele Haiti, Jean's charitable foundation for Haiti.

"We have come together to launch this new initiative because I believe we can do more and better for Haiti when we act together," Jean told a Manhattan news conference. "We are not only interested in feeding people in response to the current crisis, but we want to offer them an alternative that can help them in a sustainable way," he said.

"Together For Haiti" plans to employ 1,800 people a day in poor areas, distribute food to 1.5 million people and provide fertilizers to 55,000 farmers. Grants will also be given to 9,000 families to support the development of micro-enterprises.

"We want to give them the opportunity to set up a small business which they can live on instead of assisting them every time there is a crisis," Jean told Reuters. He was accompanied at the news conference by aid officials and by fellow musician and social activist Paul Simon, who promised support.

At least six people were killed during a week of violent protests last month against rising food and fuel costs in Haiti, where most people scrape by on less than $2 per day.

Rita Marley is desperate for singer Lauryn Hill to portray her on screen in the first ever biopic of her late husband, reggae icon Bob Marley. Marley is working as executive producer on the big screen adaptation of her 2004 autobiography No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley - and has her sights set on casting the former Fugees frontwoman, her daughter-in-law, in the chronicle of her tumultuous 15-year marriage to the musician.

She explains, “Lauryn would be ideal (to play me). She sees my life as her life.” The as-yet-untitled project is slated to begin filming early next year (2009).

During the summer of 1996, a caller to shock jock Howard Stern’s radio show said on the air that he’d heard Lauryn tell MTV that she’d rather see her child starve than have a white kid buy her album. MTV would announce later that the allegation wasn’t true, but by that time it was too late. The ugly, false rumor had already been set in motion.

“From this one broadcast, all of a sudden people who appreciated my music thought that there was something wrong with who I was and what I represented,” says Lauryn. Instead of letting a publicist act on her behalf, Lauryn, furious and very hurt, called a radio station herself to deny the charge. “I said, ‘How can I possibly be a racist? My music is universal music. And I believe in God. If I believe in God, then I have to love all of God’s creations. There can be no segregation.‘”

“Let me clarify this right now,” Lauryn responds forcefully. “I am not a racist. I love people who love God. I love good people. If you’re a good person with a good heart, you’re cool with me. And I hope I’m cool with you. There’s nothing racist about anything in my heart.“

Lauryn insists she wants people to understand that her goal to improve the self-love of young African-American women should never be confused with advocating racial supremacy.
“There are a lot of young black girls who I meet in my travels who don’t have a lot of self-esteem,” she explains. “So if I communicate to them that they’re beautiful, no white person should find fault in that. It doesn’t mean that young white girls aren’t beautiful, because they are just as beautiful.”

Wyclef Jean returns to Columbia Records with “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant,” the artist’s first full-length album for the label since his third solo album, “Masquerade,” entered the Billboard Top 200 at #6 in June 2002. “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant” is slated for release this autumn.With “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant,” his sixth full-length studio album, Wyclef Jean continues the autobiographical musical odyssey he began a decade ago with his 1997 triple-platinum debut solo album, “Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival Featuring Refugee All-Stars” (aka “The Carnival”).

Wyclef gave his fans their first taste of “The Carnival II” with the release of the album’s lead-in single, “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill),” featuring Akon, Lil’ Wayne and introducing Niia. Fugees Reunion “straight dead”

There were faint signs of hope. There were reasons to believe. There was even a decent comeback single released in late 2005 called “Take It Easy,” in which Lauryn Hill passionately and repeatedly proclaimed “we need reconciliation!” Now, there’s nothing but destroyed dreams and disappointed, disillusioned fans.

“Straight dead” is how Prazrakel “Praz” Michel described the status of the highly anticipated Fugees reunion album.

“You know, unfortunately, Miss Hill, she’s got some things she needs to deal with. I wish her the best, but life goes on,” Michel told SOHH.com.

In the meantime, Michel and lead Fugees vocalist Wyclef Jean continue to work on solo material and movies (”I gotta shoot a movie with my man Josh Lucas and Tim Roth after I finish my album,” Michel revealed), and Hill continues to make millions of anxious fans wait for her artistic insanity to end.

British neo-soul songstress Joss Stone will return with her third album March 20th. Lauryn Hill is one of several guests lined up for effort. Hill appears rapping on Stone’s new track “Music.” Other collaborators on the effort include rapper Common, multi-talented producer Raphael Saadiq and producer Beau Dozier who worked on Mind Body & Soul.

“It’s a very special song to me that I wrote with Novel. This song is my realization moment, when I realized I was wasting my time looking for an unconditional love in another human being. So far in my short little life, I haven’t ever seen it completely. All love between all humans, I believe, is a tiny bit conditional. It’s not like that with music. The only true unconditional love is music and God, for me. The fact that Lauryn Hill was inspired by it enough to write what she did is just is crazy to me. I prayed on that one hard. She’s amazing. Wyclef Gives Free Concert in Jacmel, Haiti

The week-long YéleFest celebration in Jacmel, Haiti, culminated in a free concert for an estimated 40,000 people on December 1, 2006. YéleFest brought young Haitian artists, filmmakers, musicians and actors together for one week of activities in Jacmel, Haiti, with representatives of non-governmental organizations, volunteer groups, development agencies and donor governments. The program was designed to allow these diverse groups the opportunity to explore ways to use culture and the arts to create new models for achieving sustainable development.

Reunion Fading, The Carnival II

More than one year has passed since the “reuninted” Fugees released their track “Take It Easy” - however, the reunion seems to fade away quitely. In a recent interview WYCLEF JEAN has only few words left for the reunion, more so about his upcoming album “The Carnival 2″, which is almost completed.

“Carnival 2 is going to be crazy. It’s going to be the wildest piece of material that you’ve heard from Wyclef since the ‘Carnival’ as a whole piece of music.”

Jerry Wonder, Clef’s longtime producer, couldn’t hold back his excitement for “Carnival 2″.
“Wait ’till you get the 2,” he said. “It’s sort of the same concept as ‘Carnival’ but it’s like the 2020 version.” Wonder revealed that some of the guests from the first album will be back, perhaps even Lauryn Hill.

Speaking of Hill, what is going on with the Fugees reunion? When Wyclef, Lauryn and Pras hit the studio, they released one single, and another track was leaked, but nothing else has been released since. Speaking briefly about the Fugees, Jean’s tone didn’t sound too optimistic.

“Tell them hurry up. I’m moving. They gotta get with it,” he said.

“We tryin,’” added Wonder. “It’s probably going to happen but everybody’s busy.”

This collection of Lauryn Hill songs contains early versions of some of her Unplugged Songs.
The concert for MuchMusic (Canada) in Toronto in 2001 was one of the first concerts Lauryn Hill premiered her new songs at.
A few weeks later she performed her Unplugged songs for “MTV Unplugged 2.0″.
The show was taped in July 2001 but was not released until May 2002.
The Collection also includes Lauryn Hill performing “Adam Lives In Theory” at the ESSENCE 2001 Awards.

Lauryn Hill Attacks Church at Vatican Show

US hip-hop singer Lauryn Hill stunned leading members of the Roman Catholic Church when she accused them of moral corruption, exploitation and abuse from the stage during a Christmas concert at the Vatican.

Hill, 28, launched her diatribe in front of an audience of 7,500 guests at a packed Paul VI hall, used by Pope John Paul II for indoor public audiences.

"I'm not here to celebrate, like you, the birth of Christ, but to ask you why you are not in mourning for his death in this place," Hill said, reading from a prepared statement as she came on stage for her performance as part of a all-star gala concert.

"Holy God has witnessed the corruption of your leadership, of the exploitation and abuses which are the minimum that can be said for the clergy," she added, calling on the hierarchy to "repent".

Stunned hierarchy in the front row at Saturday night's concert included one of the most senior figures in the church, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, who is head of the Italian bishops conference.

An aide to Ruini, Bishop Rino Fisichella, described the singer's speech as "a rash outburst. An uneducated act showing a lack of respect for the place she was a guest and for those who invited her."

The Holy See has been widely accused of failing to respond adequately to a pedophile scandal involving priests, particularly in the United States.

The US church has been under intense fire over the policy of some archdioceses of moving known child-abusing priests from parish to parish over decades.

Hill, a former member of The Fugees and winner of five Grammy Awards, said she was not speaking as a representative of any religious organisation.

Italian press reports today said her attack was unlikely to be included when the concert is broadcast on Italian television on December 24, Christmas Eve.

Hill flew back to New York last night unrepentant. She said: "What I said was the truth. Is telling the truth bad manners? What I asked was the church to repent for what has happened."
